Why Do Trees Topple in a Storm? - Scientific American Blog Network

I went to Cornwall in the beginning of June, and we went to a beach to which we found a dead tree on the sand. I found it bitter sweet that it had ended up there. The only trees around were up high on the cliffs, so I researched how it might have been sent there and windthrow was a possibility.

Windthrow: the uprooting and overthrowing of trees by the wind

Today, I got comfortable with the space and recognised that I am here to start on my own show.
I established the space as a friend that will help me create and inspire my ideas along the way.
I drew out two different set plans.
I wrote about the process of windthrow and what associations I made with it.
I wrote down things I've seen that I liked for inspiration.

Urban trees
From my research on windthrow, and my discovery that urban trees are more likely to be affected by the process, I decided to do more research on this group.
I discovered their advantages to society:
-
Remove air pollutants
-
Filter stormwater
-
Provide shade
-
Release water vapour
I discovered the challenges they face:
-
Difficult growing conditions due to exposure to pollutants and limited space
-
Insufficient resources for proper care
-
Undervalued by citizens and often considered a financial burden
Could urban trees stand as a metaphor?
Are there demographics in humanity that suffer the same challenges?
Urban work

HIGH VIS.
On my walk to uni, I go past the construction work that has been going since September.
On these walks,
I see workers in high vis sat eating lunch.
I see workers in high vis standing and waiting.
I see workers in high vis pointing and beckoning.
- I like the mobility that the work uniform provides and the semiotic translations it offers.
- Construction workers workplace is linked to land, buildings, urban trees
- High vis on stage with the lighting however, could be a problem...
Choreography
- Began on a movement showing struggle and effort
- Worked in a martial arts studio in the student union which made for an interesting change of scene
- Tried and tested with meditative music by Jon Hopkins to contrast the struggle in movement
